Everything IDS 2011

This past week flew by at lightning speed.  I haven’t blogged or had a chance to read blogs but I’m hoping this week is a bit more calm.

The Interior Design Show (IDS) media preview, dinner and opening night party, Trade Day, client work, guest blogging as well as other social and family activities have filled the week with fun and creativity overload.

First, you may have noticed that things look a little different around here. My new blog header and layout have been installed. A few things need to be tweaked, most notably the sidebar labels and layout.  It was a much needed improvement and I think the header says “fresh and happy” which was my goal.

The other item of note that I must mention is that I wrote a guest blog post for the Design DNA blog on the Eames LCW chair.  I have coveted this chair for decades!  If you are interested in the history of household items like furniture, toys and appliances to name a few,  tune in to HGTV Tuesday nights at 9:30 EST in Canada.

Now on to IDS!

Wednesday, Jan 26:  IDS Media Preview

A few bloggers and media types were invited to a media preview to see a behind the scenes look at IDS.  Booths were still undergoing construction, hence the need for our yellow accessory. Thanks to Shauna Levy, IDS co-founder, who took time out of her schedule to give us the tour and Faulhaber PR for organizing.  You may recognize some familiar faces in the group and that’s Shauna with the long, curly hair in the back row.

We all know Sarah Richardson, but many us didn’t know her brother Theo Richardson until now. He is a partner in the NYC-based product design firm, Rich, Brilliant, Willing.  Their Sibling Revelry space – bedroom, home office and dining room – was inspired by Theo’s products. You can see some of his products above - white pendant, clock, red dining chair and glass pendants.

We had an opportunity to chat with Sarah and Tommy Smythe, here with Arren Williams

Friday, Jan 28:  Trade Day

IDS just keeps getting better year after year.  There was a lot to take in.  The following snapshots are of products and spaces that inspired me.

lighting
1.  Ooi – lighting constructed from multiple layers of paper; 2. Brothers Dressler; 3. Snob – brass pendants from Egypt; 4. Arbutus and Denman – pendants made from spun aluminum.

Area rugs
1. Elte; 2, 5, 6. Modern Weave; 3, 7.  Weavers Art; 4. W Studio  I think these all speak for themselves.

1. Cushions by graphic designer, Nicole Tarasick;  2, 4 Wallpaper and textile design by Lucia Kinghorn; 3. Wool blankets by Oleana.

These stained glass mosaic tiles from Edgewater Studio in Vancouver are simply the most gorgeous tiles I have ever seen.  My favourite is the one in the middle.

spaces
I loved Style at Home’s fresh, colourful space.  Go here to see more photos.  The chalkboard sketches drew you in to Montauk’s large space.  I must have a Montauk sofa in my lifetime!

sibling revelry
These photos below taken from Sarah’s site are much better than the ones I took.  You can see how much they accomplished from the time of the Media Preview.  Sorry to be so Sarah-centric but out of all the spaces at the show, I can relate to these and they are classic Sarah.

I hope I didn’t lose you in this epic post!  It was an amazing week and I was so happy to be included in all of these fun and informative events.  I was inspired by the people I met, the people I spent time with and the people that create!  If you have never been to IDS, be sure to make note for the end of January 2012.

Walls with Character ~ Bedazzled

In the spotlight for all of February ~ Walls with Character... Don't forget to send in your entries at torresp27@hotmail.com

Here is a wall that truly tells you a story… Living in a rented apartment is no reason not to have a gorgeous wall!! I admire Bhargavi and her zest to create a personal wall…

A bit about the wall-

The wall I've sent you pics of is from our living room. Like I said, I love colour and wanted to get the wall painted red or in some luscious colour. Alas, the landlord didn't want us painting the walls in deep colours, so we had to find some other way of brightening the wall. Another constraint we had was that we couldn't fix too many nails, so out went the idea of hanging lots of wall-art on the wall.

During a visit to the local Homecentre outlet, I discovered the vinyl patterns and knew that the stickers would be perfect for the living room wall. The puppet hanging amidst the flowers is Chi chi :-). I also like shuffling wall hangings at least once in 2-3 months - one of the pics is of a painting we bought from China Town in Singapore. It's one of my favourite places to pick knick-knacks and there simply isn't a thing that you can't buy there.

Do you have a wall that can tell a story?? Do you have the enthusiasm to fill your wall?? Walls with Character is in the spotlight for all of February... so go on... and share pictures of that gorgeous wall... Email me at torresp27@hotmail.com

There was no line dancing…

But there was beauty, everywhere you looked: The Opryland Hotel is seriously one of the most magnificent places I have ever stayed. Absolutely gorgeous. And just like last year, I didn’t have nearly enough time to look around! I only got night shots, and they’re still amazing: There was plenty of goofing off: I’m trying to bring Traci to the dark side…that would be giving up the

Scentsy Giveaway

***GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED***
Sweet and pretty Jordan Buerschenk, an escential consultant for Scentsy contacted me a few weeks ago to ask if I had ever tried Scentsy products. Scentsy is a type of wickless candle product where the wax is melted using the heat of a lightbulb. I had heard of Scentsy and I have friends who have them but I had resisted buying one telling myself that I already own enough candles to light and smell up a small city. Jordan kindly offered to send me a plug-in to try so that I could give an honest review.
I choose the Taro which is so pretty during the day and night.
I plugged it into the wall of my dining room. A few hours later I was delighted to walk into the living room and smell the wonderful aroma that had filled both areas of my home. When I walk through my front door I am now greeted with a delightful smell and the best part is that I don't have to worry about blowing out a candle when I leave the house.
I'm very happy with my Scentsy and now one of you lucky readers will be able to own one too! To enter all you need to do is leave a comment. You can get bonus entries for :
1) tweeting about the giveaway
2) subscribing to Jordan's newsletter on her homepage
Jordan will send the winning reader a Groovy White Plug-In + The following three Scents : Enchanted Mist, Cucumber Lime + My Wish.
If you don't want to wait to see if you win, or if you want one and you're not feeling lucky, or if you already own a Scentsy and want to buy more products, Jordan has generously offered my readers an additional 10% discount (for all orders received by February 15)! To be eligible for the discount, you will need to click on the 'email me' tab on her home site. Make sure 'JOY' is in the subject line and your order is in the body of the email. Sunday was blissful.. It was lovely not to go to work… and take some good rest.. We headed off to the spa… for some back massage.. and feet reflexology.. *sigh* Isnt that just perfect?? I spent Sunday doing nothing… I don’t know how the day passed by !!

Sunday night was the actual wedding… Pheras by the sea… simply gorgeous!! I cant begin to explain … Weddings make me so so emotional.. I want my little girl to stay little.. and don’t want to even think of giving her away.. 

Spray Paint Thaw

Hooray! The temperatures here have finally reached near the 40's! And even though the spray paint can directions say ideal painting temps are 50-70 degrees, I ran outside with a thrift project in one hand and shaking a paint can in the other. The project I chose was a large metal tray that had an original finish of a mix of greens, browns, and rust. It's a subtle change but I think it looks much nicer painted metallic charcoal with the details highlighted using silver Rub n' Buff.It looks great sitting on my kitchen table corralling all of the pretties I like to keep there. I try to have a candlelight dinner whenever we eat at the table---even though my boys question why. Isn't it a momma's job to insert a few feminine details into the lives of her men? Besides, it makes me happy to be surrounded by beautiful things and if momma's happy then everybody's happy, right? And another thing that makes me happy is to be able to use my favorite makeover tool again!

The Friday Mix ~ Papyrus

Have you been waiting for Friday??? to visit a new blog... make a new friend?? The Friday Mix today... features the very creative... Iniyaal from Papyrus... I admire people who follow their passions.. in whatever little way... so I truly admire Iniyaal... and her hand made book marks can be found in all the books I'm currently reading... If you'd like to be part of the Friday Mix, please email me on torresp27@hotmail.com

I am Iniyaal and I sell eco-friendly bookmarks and decor items. I am an engineer working full time as a Business Intelligence architect. Apart from that, I draw, paint, shoot pictures, stitch, craft, read and write. I love creating anything and everything, from aprons to greeting cards. Being lazy from as long as I can remember, creativity is an excuse that I give for keeping away from professional training in arts :)

My bookmarks are available at my Etsy shop, “Papyrus“, and my blog at “Papyrus ~ Handmade heaven“. Bookmarks can be interesting and artistic, both between the pages of a book and on your desk as a display item. Here is a glimpse into my li’l shop.

A tulip blooming between pages:

Like what you see? Peep into my Etsy shop or Papyrus for more and buy what you like.

I also blog at “Art, Beauty, Society“. It is more of a photo journal of my love for wild nature and village life. Featured here are photographic Nature trails that open the door to new discoveries and learnings. Like these beautiful tea estates.. the lure of which has led mankind to wipe out acres of massive forests.

Here comes my other big time favourite… Indian villages. Villages are a world on their own, many aspects of which are fascinating. We can happily learn a lot from rurual lifestyle and fuse it into our busy urban lives.

Wondered why villages have the largest share of happy old aged people..? A physically active, mentally peaceful and environmentally pure lifestyle is the best way to lead a long happy life :) like this smiling granny.

Hope you enjoyed the photos and bookmarks. Would love to see you over at Papyrus. Do drop by for a visit.

Candles and Pantries

When decorating with candles and their holders
do you get frustrated?Does your candle sit a little skiwampus in your hurricane?
Does it look too lonely and bland in it's container?Well the solution is as close as your pantry!
Simply pull out sacks of rice, beans or peas.Dump the dry food goods into the candle holders
and watch your frustration melt away.
I like to use rice, green or yellow split peas,
black, white or kidney beans.I've used epsom salt too.
If you're a coffee drinker you can use coffee beans.
There are several frugal food choices for fillers
right in your own kitchen.
Which ones have you used?

Home Tour ~ Shuba

Welcome to Shuba's home... Her home truly reflects the talents of this super woman... An Architech by profession, she worked for a few years, got married moved to the US, kids came along... then worked part time... And as kids took priority... today, Shuba is a full time, stay at home mom!! This only means.. that her passion in home decor enhances by the minute... You'll be as surprised as I am...

Full of warm, earthy tones, Shubha has filled each room with a variety of unqiue curios and knick knacks; each with their own story to tell.

This was one of my favorite walls in Shubha's home - I loved the sketches, the touch of brass and the lovely bursts out color. One of those walls you could stand in front of and have several pleasant conversations about each decorative piece!

Buys what catches your attention is the - 700 ganeshas she has collected... Each piece is unique - and has been selected and placed with utmost care...

I thought this was a lovely corner as well.

The below lamp was put together by Shuba... She had the brass pot.. and she shopped for the lamp shade.. joined together... they become a fabulous looking lamp!!

Can't you imagine sitting here with a good book and a few chocolate biscuits? Or even to just lie here and think through the days happenings - such a peaceful spot - bliss!!

I'm a huge fan of chests like this - Indian and otherwise. It makes me long to know what secrets and beauty from the past it holds - aren't you curious too?

Each step done by Shubha - stenciled orange pattern on blue base - She usedvarnish and orange colour....to match the tiles on the floor. What a unique idea!!

Oh.. another one of my favs... the first caricature is of Kumar and Shuba during the first year of marriage.... The second one is of the family .... Each wall... tells you a story of love... passion & hope!!

Shuba's home is a museum of antiques, brass, wood and ganesha.. She hunts all over the villages of South India for utensils, brassware - into random pawn shops to pick 'n choose her favorites!!

*sigh* what a gorgeous collection!!

This is Shuba's favourite room... ~ her family room!! From the floor panels.. to the selection of curios.. to the arrangement and everything else.. was all put together by Shuba... Can you see the love reflecting in her home??

You've seen her post for 'walls with character'... now you've seen her home ~ filled with love and character.. Dont you just love places like this?? ~ a true reflection of the person she is...
Does your home speak a story?? Email us on torresp27@hotmail.com
