Bedding for the Girls’ Room

I haven’t blogged about the girls’ shared room lately because I’ve stalled.  But, I did add new pillows recently which has kind of sparked my interest again in getting their room finished.

(I think my lack of enthusiasm comes from the amount of stuff I find scattered everywhere in their room on a daily basis.  Dirty socks, happy meal toys, beads, candy wrappers, pictures of Justin Bieber, hair bows, lip gloss, books, crayons, rings, pipe cleaners, scribbled notebook paper. . . I could on and on and on.)

The pillows were a family affair.  My aunt made them for me, and my sister (who has an Etsy shop) embroidered each girl’s initial.  I think the best policy for kids’ bedding is to keep it inexpensive so that it’s not devastating to replace and simple so that they can actually make their own beds (well, in an ideal world).

(I knew the pillows will have a high probability of being abused so I went with an inexpensive fabric.  I love the fun prints and prices available from Premier Prints, especially for kids’ rooms.)

For their beds, I’m sticking with plain white sheets (bleachable!) and these soft cotton blankets:

For extra warmth, I’d like to add a duvet folded at the end of the bed.  I’m thinking of trying these duvet covers from Ikea:

NYPONROS Duvet cover and pillowcase(s) IKEA Yarn-dyed; the yarn is dyed before weaving; gives the bedlinens a soft feel.

The Girls’ Bedroom: Here’s the Plan

My husband came through on my Valentine’s gift, with a little help from my dad.  One edged and the other rolled the girls’ bedroom ceiling:

Did I mention that he has now decided to pay someone else to paint our master bedroom ceiling?  :)

I went with Olympic’s “Salsa Diane” (how’s that for a sassy paint name?).  It’s a mix of coral and red.  I painted the walls light gray, using Sherwin William’s “Worldly Gray.”

This room isn’t really on the fast track to get finished, but I do have a general plan that includes DIY twin upholstered headboards in my new favorite Ikat fabric.  (You can find it for a great price here.)

Reader Room: Shabby Chic for a Steal

Decorating an entire room, start to finish, can be pricey.  Andrea, however, was up for the challenge when it came to creating a retreat for her daughter in their new home.

This is what the room looked like just before they moved in:

Using paint, furniture and accessories she already had (some from her own childhood), she was able to pull the room together, spending only $425!  The result:

Here are a few of my favorite details . . .

She found this chair at a local consignment shop, painted the frame and had it recovered:

A vintage stool serves as a nightstand:

Since we all love a good makeover with a small price tag, I asked Andrea to share her five best tips for adding style on a small budget:

#1  Use Color Wisely

I wanted to make a big impact by painting the ceiling a robin's egg blue.

#2  Repaint, Repurpose

I reused a desk I already had and painted it pink. I also reused a chair and painted it green. I spray painted an existing metal bookshelf blue for a punch of color.

#3  Add Detail with Trim

I dressed up a $20 chandelier with some blue rick-rack trim added to the shades.

#4  Look for Hidden Potential

I bought a $65 chair at a thrift store and had it reupholstered with some fabric found on clearance for $4/yard.

#5  Shop Clearance and Remnant Fabrics

I made large pillows for the bed from more fabric found on clearance for $4/yard. The fabric was the inspiration for the entire room makeover.

Lots of Pink with a Little Green: A Little Girl's Bedroom

Today, I'm sharing pictures of my friend Katie's four-year-old daughter's room.  Although she says that it's not quite complete, I insisted that it was "blog-worthy" last time I was at her house.  (Besides, I know you love to see real people's spaces as much as I do!)

This is how the room started:

[100_3824.JPG]

Her first purchase was this cute Pottery Barn bedding, but she wanted the room to have a little punch.

And, after 1 1/2 years worth of tweaks and changes:

The whole room was done on a pretty tight budget.  The headboards, desk and mirror were all second-hand finds that just needed some fresh paint.  She ordered the pom-pom pillows from Pottery Barn Teen and we had them monogrammed in a clean, simple font.

She stenciled the entire wall behind the beds, using a template she found online.  (You can find a similar one here.)

She put her little girl's first birthday dress on display wrapping the back of an old frame with fabric and painting the frame. The lamps were a HomeGoods purchase (we added the ribbon trim to match the green desk).

Since the room wasn't wired for overhead lighting, she bought a pack of these inexpensive Lilly Pulitzer pom-poms and hung one from the ceiling.

Thanks to Katie and her sweet girl for letting me share her 99% finished space!
