Weekly Story ~ wk 2

So am back on the topic of gardens again...

With a few emails from people asking... some asking... I dont have garden pics to link in... Well then.. Go on and link some old pics... even better... just link anything on your blog... *smiles*...

A few more emails asking me 'so what happens to us?'... 'we have no garden'...

*sigh*.. How I wish I could find some pics of my little balcony to show you how a cozy pretty garden can be maintained even in a little balcony... Nonetheless... joining us today on Colours Dekor is Surabhi Mehrotra... sharing pics of her balcony... *smiles*...

Surabhi shares her story on how she transformed her empty balcony to one with an over dose of pots... to now one transformed into a beautiful and colourful little piece of sunshine..

Quick tips for balcony spaces... before we move to Surabhi's story...

1. Organise differnt sizes and shapes of pots, with a variety of flowers and plants.

2. For small balconies... use creepers to fill up wall space. You can also use hanging plants, money plants, etc... that fall downwards and can be hung of the ceiling.

3. Colouring a wall with a single colour... example yellow or lime green... or even attempting a painting like some simple birds, flowers, stars or even a 'warli' or 'madhubani'... gives the space character.

4. Use lots of garden accents, like gnomes, chimes, bells, bird feeders, stones, pebbles, etc.

Over to Surabhi...

Just that my hubby & I both love plants a lot and find gardening de-stressing. Initially we kept bringing pots and then realized that very little free space was left in the balcony and it was difficult to keep balcony clean and neat. So we decided to go vertical!! Donated loads of roses to neighbors and painted our dull boring wall to bright sunny yellow as we had flowers in purple, magenta shades.

As a person also I love bright colours. Dull colours make me sad, so when inside our home we have a sober combo, I thought why not experiment with a bright colour in the balcony. So hubby and I drilled, put up fence and potted creepers… took care of them for a few months… that is now fruitful and our mornings starts with a colourful happy note.

One thing for sure… I learnt that beside regular care, you need to talk to the plants, put them together in group so they dont feel lonely and if possible play some music.

Next on our agenda is to add some bird feeder, bird house and a bird bath and some lights.

Surabhi is an HR & textile professional, took a break and now has a small venture…

called "Surabhi Ka Pitara"

I totally love how the yellow wall looks... simply impressive!!

So if you've got such a gorgeous balcony ... go on... link in.. or email me on coloursdekor@gmail.com

Weekly Story ~ wk 1

Hello my lovelies… Are you ready to join the Weekly Story here again? Well… as you join in with your stories… Mondays in February will be focused on Garden Stories..

Personalizing your space is giving it your special touch, inducing it with passion and transforming its character… The same applies to garden spaces.

Do you have a garden area? If you live in a villa in Dubai, the lease agreement confines you to the existing prominent features. Here are a few tips to enhance your space within those limits…

Divide your garden layout into two sections : the parts that will not change, example garage area, tiled floors, patio, driveway, etc… and the area where you will try out your gardening skills. Once this is defined you are ready to start.

Today we focus on accessories. Before making any purchases, measure the space that you are not going to plant in. This will enable you to buy suitable garden furniture like hammock, gazebo, swings, umbrellas, or rattan sofas, etc. Remember larger items like gazebos look fabulous in bigger spaces and bar style seating looks amazing when your space is confined…. And if you’ve got a comfy medium sized lawn, try out an Arabic seating or an easy going bench accompanies with sofas… mix – match and more…

Decorative items like statues, garden gnomes, bottles, clay pottery, pebbles, coloured cushions, etc add oomph to any space. Wind chimes & water features are another must have. These surely add the soothing and relaxing effect to your garden area.

Try illuminating your garden with LED solar lights in different shapes & sizes… from butterflies to flowers, to twinkling fairy lights. Brighten up your space by putting solar fairy lights into an old lantern. This creates magic in the evenings. And while the focus is on eco friendly solar lights… don’t forget tea lights… *smiles*
Most importantly stay away from clutter.

Would be awesome to see you linking in your garden photos in the next four weeks... If you've got anything special to share, email me on coloursdekor@gmail.com

The Weekly Story ~ wk 80

Remember last week, I was talking about garden cleaning.... This week I've managed to clean and clear the rest of my home..... *sigh*.... Yes, it took two week of planning and two weeks of working in the evenings... till late.. at night to get this accomplished....

But now that its done, I can start planning and focussing on individual projects *smiles*

And this is how the backyard looks... sweeping the floor, mopping the floor, cleaning the bench... *smiles*.. Makes me believe that this place needs a makeover... Saying that, the weather in Dubai going forward isn't going to allow us to use this space.... so I only need to revamp this in Sept...

Mr. Froggy is chipped... but I cant do without him... He is the cutest... I'm going to paint him into a happy pink colour I think... *grins*

Some images of my happy space... This is where I like... spending my 'me' time with a book... or cup of coffee.. and across this... is this cute little buddha...

So join in....  'The Weekly Story' linky party ~ open from Monday through Wednesday every week..

The Weekly Story ~ wk 79

Finally... a weekend.. with nearly no guests... Yes.. that is a rarity in my home.. Anyway.. so I took this opportunity to clean and clear the garden...

And when I say, clean... means... I wiped every single pot, I dusted all the lanterns, and washed the tea light holders and all other little thingies in the garden... Till they were sparkling...

See how clean the tealight is... *smiles*...

Oh... this makes me feel so happy... *smiles*..

And I re-arranged the pots, planters, little thingies... etc..

Then finally I kept the birdbath for the little birdies... and this is how it looks... *smiles*... More images of my back yard in the next post...

And now.. I am totally exhausted... *sigh*...

So tell me what you did.. Join 'The Weekly Story' linky party ~ open from Monday through Wednesday every week..

Garden beauties..

Now continuing the so called garden makeover... *smiles*...

Introducing my mommy's green thumb.... Mint for mojitos....

and a potted vegetables section.... *smiles*  ... there are chillies, coriander, tomatoes and egg plant... *smiles*..

.... look tomatoes!! tomatoes!! Aren't they the cutest?

This bit hasn't changed as yet.... The plants are outgrown... and a bit of a jungle... But I really like them... so will trim them a little later...

And the backyard.... *smiles*... The Arabic seating is where I spend most evenings.. watching the stars and listening to the neighbours music... (during the weekends)... Its my peaceful area... But the summers will be upon us soon... and there won't be any outdoor seating...

Well... watch out for a Diwali makeover... later in the year... (giggles).. I think this are could do with a little bit of colour.. and a few hanging beauties.. What say??

A small makeover

If you follow me on twitter or facebook, you must have heard about how one weekend.. I messed up the garden... *grins*...

Here are my attempts to make amends... and make things look right again...

You've seen corners of the garden in my old posts... The bamboo partition thing was straight... I wanted a little bit of a pattern... or curve... What do you think?

Don't know if you remember, but I had three dwarfs from my Sydney trip... They didn't survive a few kids in my house... So, when I saw this at Daiso the other day, I simply had to get them home....

And my tulsi pot broke too... *sobs*... so now replaced by a simple brown one...

Oh... and I finally took out the trunk... and paved way for green grass... That I must admit looks good... But it makes the bird bath look like this... Which I'm not particularly impressed with... So this particular corner... needs another makeover... but thats for another time..

Do you remember my small lemon tree plant... ?? Look how bigs its become....

Well... these haven't changed... but I thought I'll add in these pictures as well...

.... on either side of the stair case...

Now ... an view from the top... for you.... I know.. I know... I've messed up the grass... but that will grow soon.... I'll post pictures of that when its all green... But what do you think of the design??

The flowers don't do much justice to the space as well... *sigh*...

But its work in progress.... so for now I'll leave it looking like this... and in three months time... I'll add a few more seasonal beauties... *smiles*..
